Miscellaneous historical documents, dating approximately from the turn of the century to the 1970s, consist of correspondence, clippings, and printed material relating to Lillian Wald's election to the Hall of Fame for Great Americans in 1971, to the establishment of Lillian D. Wald Day in 1965, the Lillian Wald teas, 1960s-1970s, Wald's memorial services in 1940, and other honors and events relating to Wald; press releases, clippings, minutes, statements, and printed material relating to the separation of the Visiting Nurse Service from the Henry Street Settlement in 1944; instruction sheets for nurses, ca. 1940s-1950s, containing information about techniques, policies, and procedures; typescript "patients' stories" (nurses' narratives of patients' conditions and treatment), ca. 1920s-1930s; patients' letters to and about nurses, ca. 1960s; brochures, calendars, flyers, and other printed material, 1930s-1970s, used by the Visiting Nurse Service to disseminate information about the Service and to solicit nurses; correspondence with publishers and clippings of reviews, 1915-1916, relating to Wald's book, THE HOUSE ON HENRY STREET, published in 1915 and illustrated by Abraham Phillips; photographs of Lillian Wald; and miscellaneous correspondence, clippings, minutes, photographs, and newsletters and other printed material produced by the Visiting Nurse Service both during its affiliation with the Henry Street Settlement. And after its separation in 1944 and concerning the Service and Wald, its founder.

The Henry Street Settlement was organized in 1893 by Lillian Wald and Mary Brewster in New York City's Lower East Side neighborhood. Miss Wald and Miss Brewster were nurses and the settlement's early work was principally a visiting nurse service. By the time the settlement was incorporated in 1903, its work had expanded to include many of the usual settlement services. Miss Wald was succeeded as headworker in 1933 by Helen Hall.
